Near Northside unveils new neighborhood brand identity designed by local resident

The Near Northside neighborhood has unveiled a new brand identity, including a community logo selected through a public vote. The neighborhood, which is bounded by I-10 to the south, I-45 to the west and I-610 Loop, has always been a desirable area to live, bursting with vibrant culture and community pride. As Houston continues to grow, neighborhood leaders decided to embark on a rebranding effort as part of retaining the area’s culturally rich identity.

Avenue CDC, an organization dedicated to revitalizing communities, obtained a $10,000 grant from NeighborWorks® to support the community in developing its new brand identity and to market the community as a distinct Houston neighborhood. After a year of development, the Near Northside logo was unveiled during a community event at Red Ox Grill. The new logo was designed by local artist and Near Northside resident Jesse Prieto, who participated in a competition hosted by Avenue CDC to design the new image. Residents were given the opportunity to vote for their favorite logo design during “Sabor del Northside,” an annual festival drawing 3,000 residents. The design received an overwhelming 75% of the total votes during the competition and Prieto received a $500 design prize.

“The Near Northside has a rich history and a bright future, and we are thrilled that residents and business owners have come together to create a neighborhood logo and marketing plan to let the rest of Houston know about all of the great things the community as to offer,” stated Executive Director of Avenue CDC, Mary Lawler.

“The unveiling of the new logo for the Near Northside is emblematic of what is going on in the community itself – it has always been a great place to eat, to live and to recreate and now the residents are taking it to a new level and announcing themselves to Greater Houston,” stated Council Member Ed Gonzalez. “Hats off to Avenue CDC and LISC for being the driving force behind many of the great changes in the neighborhood.”
