Avenue Receives $10,000 Grant from Texas Bar Foundation to Help Launch Webinar Series to Guide Residents Toward Homeownership

Avenue has announced a new $10,000 grant from Texas Bar Foundation in support of its housing and credit rights education services within its Asset Building programming. The grant will support Avenue’s podcast, “Your Journey to HomeOwnership,” to promote Avenue’s services to a wider audience with accessible information and guidance from subject matter experts.

“We are grateful to the Texas Bar Foundation for this funding, which will help ensure that low-income, underserved and marginalized renters and homeowners in Houston have access to the information and resources they need to stabilize and improve their housing circumstances.” said Mary Lawler, Executive Director at Avenue. “Building stronger, more resilient communities starts with safe and secure housing which Avenue supports by providing residents the tools to successfully navigate the housing market.”

As part of its commitment to strengthening communities in Houston and improving the quality of life for all, Avenue’s Asset Building programming helps clients improve their economic circumstances by increasing their financial literacy, empowering families to make better financial decisions and gain access to financial products to help them achieve their goals.

While Avenue’s in-person services are readily available to anyone, prospective homebuyers continue to feel discouraged by current market rates and feel intimidated by the idea of purchasing a home. As a response, in 2023 the Homebuyer Education team launched an informal webinar covering specific topics such as “Overcoming Today’s Homeownership Challenges: Discussing Interest Rates, Collections, Credit, High Home Prices, Debt and Down Payment” and “How to Plan Your Tax Return for Your Home Purchase.” With Texas Bar Foundation support, Avenue will formalize and establish the webinar series into a podcast as a resource of common knowledge, producing twelve 45-minute broadcasts annually. Three of the twelve webinar topics will be based on biannual workshops offered in the spring and in the fall.

Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $27 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably-funded bar foundation.

Since 1991, Avenue has helped revitalize Houston neighborhoods by leveraging $170 million in investments, including the development of 220+ single-family homes, 1,000 rental homes and Avenue Center, a community hub offering asset building programs, primary and behavioral health care and early childhood education programs.
