Volunteers are a vital part of Avenue CDC. Many community and corporate groups, such as General Electric's Elfun Society and CitiCard's volunteer groups, have helped Avenue CDC in numerous clean up and demolition projects. Volunteers give their time to landscape and beautify developments for new and future homebuyers; clear blighted lots and blocks of weeds, litter, and debris; and help strengthen neighborhood ties by participating in community events. As a result of our volunteer's commitment to revitalize our community, Avenue CDC is able to continue to develop affordable housing and rental properties, as well as help build a sense of civic pride for the Washington Avenue and Near Northside communities.

Bright and early on July 10th, 2006, 22 teen volunteers and youth leaders from Woodridge Baptist Church in Kingwood tackled a lot on 4310 Terry in the Near Northside recently acquired by Avenue CDC. The lot had long been overrun by weeds and litter; the teens had their work cut out for them. Armed with trash grabbers, loppers, and weed eaters, the teens dove into the jungle of weeds, most of which were taller than the volunteers by several feet. Despite the humidity, mosquitoes, and hard work, the teens cleared the lot in no time, always finding time to smile or even break into sing-alongs to keep spirits up. Twenty-four of the Woodridge Baptist Church Mission Trip volunteers returned on July 12th with enthusiasm, and cleared three more lots on Terry and Frawley that had become overrun with weeds and grass after the recent rainstorms. They worked so quickly on the three lots, they went on to clear an adjacent lot that had become overgrown as well. The volunteers cleaned five lots total over two days, and while they were eager to do work they knew could help benefit Near Northside residents, they were able to witness first hand the impact their service can make, as the son of a long time local resident stopped by the site to express his appreciation and admiration for the great work of the volunteers.
