Art on the Avenue is an evening celebration and silent auction of the works of artists with a connection to the historic Washington Avenue and Near Northside neighborhoods located north and northwest of Houston’s Downtown. Art on the Avenue benefits Avenue CDC's affordable housing programs.
Art on the Avenue 2007 was a great success! Glenn V. Godkin, Regional President of Wells Fargo, humbly accepted an award for his contributions to neighborhood revitalization, and The Art Guys graciously served as Hosts for the Preview Party. In addition to a silent auction of original works by more than 200 of Houston's best artists, last year's event featured drinks, hors d'oeuvres and live music.
For additional information, or to participate in planning and/or volunteering at Art on the Avenue 2008, contact Jimmie Luthuli at 713.864.8099, ext. 229 or jimmiel@avenuecdc.org.
Art on the Avenue 2008 will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008, and the Preview Party will take place on Thursday, November 6, 2008. The venue will be Winter Street Studios, 2101 Winter Street, a former warehouse building that now provides studio space for over 60 local artists. Winter Street Studios is owned by a partnership of Avenue CDC and Jon Deal.
Art on the Avenue has a strong tradition of excellent attendance, wonderful artwork, and successful art sales benefiting Avenue’s programs as well as participating artists. Last year over 1,000 people attended the event, which received great exposure via the Houston Chronicle, Houston Symphony Magazine, and Paper City. More than 200 artists entered 546 artworks in the show. The event raised more than $100,000 for Avenue’s community programs, and it returned an additional $37,000 from art sales to local artists.
Art on the Avenue serves as a market place for community artists in which the artists share the proceeds from the auction of their work with Avenue. Thus, the event promotes the economic success of local artists, while also raising funds for Avenue’s affordable housing programs.
In addition to showcasing the works of noted Houston artists, Art on the Avenue provides live entertainment, beer and wine, and excellent food. The event also auctions vacation packages, jewelry, and other items provided by local business owners.
Art on the Avenue raises funds for Avenue CDC’s revitalization programs which promote economic opportunities and affordable housing for the residents of Houston’s Washington Avenue and Near Northside communities.
Avenue CDC has leveraged more than $35 million of investments in our community through the development of single-family homes and rental housing units. Avenue CDC recently completed the renovation of the historic Jefferson Davis Hospital into 34 loft-style units designed as live/work space for local artists in partnership with Artspace.
