When Geraldina and John were comparing notes about creating art in their respective garages, they realized that what they needed was a studio of their own. A month later, Sawyer Gallery & Studios was launched in the Washington Arts District.

John Cryer & Geraldina I. Wise with Mayor Turner at the 2017 Preservation Houston Good Brick Awards dinner. Avenue is a partner with Preservation Houston in preserving Houston’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

A 3,500 square foot metal and concrete building at 1819 Sawyer, designed by Natalye Appel FAIA, is now home to their studio, where they envision renting to a few artists to create an artists’ collaborative.

“Having 24-foot ceilings in my painting studio nurtures my ability to think and produce large scale art,” says Geraldina Interiano Wise. She started art lessons at the age of 10 in her native El Salvador, painting al fresco in the ravines of the San Salvador volcano under the tutelage of Violeta Bonilla, who had returned from working with Diego Rivera.

For John Cryer III, FAIA, “Through being exposed to the design and construction industry since my early days in Louisiana, and leading the Page Architecture firm since 1993, I built on my technical experience and design talent to become an emerging sculptor. I needed a place for my own tools and machinery.”

They are already hosting studio visits by art patrons, artists and curators, and are looking to use some of the space as a pop-up gallery. “We have several pop-up shows in the works, but on an on-going basis, our work can be seen here and around town in juried shows,” said Geraldina.

Avenue invited John and Geraldina to chair this year’s Art on the Avenue 2017, which will be held Nov 9th &11th. The chairs got a taste of Avenue with a tour of several affordable housing properties developed by Avenue.

For Geraldina, “Home design is near and dear to me, and access to quality affordable housing and sustainable communities is a social directive that has never been more important,” commented Geraldina. John recognized the level of excellence of the comprehensive program at Avenue. “We were both impressed with not only the mission of Avenue, but the robustness of the program, from project vision and implementation to the education for homeowners. Everyone should know Avenue and what it is doing for Houston.”

Both John and Geraldina will have pieces of art at Art on the Avenue.
